Cooking Club

On Thursday afternoons, ten children from Year 5 and 6 come to Cooking Club where they learn new skills and experience different, healthy meals.

The skills taught to everyone are:

  • chopping
  • peeling
  • sieving
  • weighing
  • kneading
  • mixing
  • grating/zesting
  • frying
  • baking
  • grilling
  • boiling

Each recipe we make has a focus on healthy eating, making sure our children are given the opportunity to try new foods which have lots of nutritional value.

Please leave comments about any recipes you've tried at home or any healthy suggestions for what we could make in our Cooking Club sessions.

The children made banana and cinnamon muffins.

Bananas are rich in potassium and a very versatile fruit - they can be used in lots of different recipes.

We have also made Chilli Wraps. There was a beef mince option and a vegetarian Quorn option.

These were garnished with torn lettuce, sweet chilli sauce and light cheese.

In our last cooking session of the first half term, we made a delicious Sweet Potato, Spinach and Chickpea curry. It tasted amazing and was packed full of vegetables and spices, such as cinnamon and chilli powder for extra heat.

This week, we made mini apple crumbles. We made sure this was a healthier dessert than usual by swapping classic ingredients for some more nutritious alternatives.

Instead of using butter, we used coconut oil.

Whole wheat flour has more natural vitamins than plain flour.

We chose fine, brown sugar because it holds more minerals than refined white sugar. This is because it contains molasses.

In Cooking Club this week, we have made a savory dish which could be eaten as a lunchtime snack or as part of a main meal with sides. It is a delicious and simple meal and is an all time British classic - the sausage roll. We chose between pork sausages and vegetarian sausages and used pre-made puff pastry with an egg wash to golden the pastry while it baked.
